More Things To Do

The St. Augustine area offers an almost endless list of things to do.  For more, visit

The Alligator Farm - 5 minutes from The Sand Castle

Founded in 1892, the Alligator Farm is one of Florida's oldest zoological attractions.  Attractions include the Komodo Dragon Exhibit, Maximo (a 15 ft, 1250 lb. alligator), Albino Alligators, the Wading Bird Rookery, the Land of the Crocodiles (where 23 species of crocodiles can be seen) as well as hundreds of other alligators on display in a park-like setting.

The Lighthouse - 5 minutes from The Sand Castle

The St. Augustine Lighthouse was built in 1874 replacing the original one that fell into the sea. Tour the site and climb the tower in about an hour.  Featured on the popular Sci-Fi show Ghost Hunters, the Lighthouse also has an extensive history of paranormal activity and offers after hours ghost tours.
The Conch House
The Conch House is located near the Lighthouse and is a local favorite.  Enjoy dinner in their restaurant or have a cocktail in their unique bar area which is built out over the water at the end of a wooden walkway.  The dolphins often come and play right at your feet!  The Conch House Marina is also a favorite with local boaters and offers live music in an outdoor setting every weekend.

Marineland - 15 minutes from The Sand Castle

Marineland began in 1938 as Marine Studios.  It was used originally as a means of duplicating the variety of marine life as it exists in the wild for the purpose of filming.  It was used for many years for numerous films including the Tarzan films starring Johnny Weismuller. Now a tourist attraction, visitors can opt to feed the dolphins, swim with the dolphins or become a trainer-for-a-day!

Fort Matanzas - 15 minutes from The Sand Castle

Fort Matanzas National Monument is a 100 acre national park.  Built in 1740 as a Spanish fort, Fort Matanzas offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a Spanish soldier. Matanzas inlet was the scene of crucial events in Spanish colonial history. The massacre of 250 French soldiers here in 1565 was Spain's first move in establishing a colony in Florida.  The construction of Fort Matanzas was Spain's last effort to ward off British encroachments on St. Augustine.

It is the Spanish word for slaughters (massacre) that gives the fort its name, Matanzas.

The fort is only accessible by guided boat tours operated exclusively by the national park service.

Golf - 30 minutes from The Sand Castle

Golfers will love our proximity to some of the country's finest golf courses including World Golf Village (which also houses the Golf Hall of Fame) and the infamous TPC Player's Stadium Course at Sawgrass.

Disneyworld - 90 minutes from The Sand Castle

Orlando with all it has to offer including Disneyworld, MGM Studios, Epcot, etc is only a 90 minute drive via interstate.  Take the kids for the day then return to the peace and tranquility of the beach. (You will need it!)

Even More - 10 minutes from The Sand Castle

Tired of the sites?  The Marina is located in the Historic District. Go deep sea fishing, take a private boat tour of the historic waterfront, have an onboard picnic lunch while you watch the dolphins or take a sunset sail on the Tall Ship Freedom, a replica 19th century blockade runner.

Visit the Lightner Museum where relics of America's gilded age are elegantly displayed on the museum's three floors. Costumes, furnishings, mechanical musical insturments and other artifacts (including Tiffany stained glass) give you a glimpse into the 19th century.

Potter's Wax Museum has 160 wax figures on display.  With over 50 years experience, they provide sculpture services to theme parks around the country.

Art galleries abound in the Historic District and the area is teeming with local artists.  Visit the St. Augustine Art Association or P.A.S.T.A  galleries to purchase unique and beautiful works of art directly from the artists.
